Thank you for visiting this donation page which will support CAFOD, a charity who work with the world's poorest people. Charles was a long-term donor. Charles was born in Tientsin, China in 1926. He became a Royal Naval Reserve cadet aged 13, when he entered the Nautical College at Pangbourne. A strapping 6'3", he was school captain in ten different sports. In WWII he was posted to the Pacific and witnessed the 1945 Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay on the USS Missouri. As a young sub-lieutenant he played Fox and Geese with TRH Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret on HMS Vanguard in 1947 (see photo). He was a Catholic who spent many years of his life working for charity after leaving the Navy. He retired to Leigh in Essex, back in sight of the sea once more. He loved old Hollywood movies, brewing beer, smoking his pipe, polishing shoes in the proper fashion and piping his children downstairs with a bosun's whistle. He died quickly and mercifully in Southend Hospital on 21 January 2022 at the age of 95. He is survived by his six children and ten grandchildren, his second wife Rosemary and her three children and three grandchildren.
